Following the closure of The Engine Shed, The Crags has an idea to create positive social impact from the building.
We suggest the creation of a thriving hub for social enterprise that delivers social and economic benefits to the city while creating a positive legacy from the building.
The Hub idea could include:
A mix of micro-producers, suppliers, and event specialists could turn the old Engine Shed building into a thriving space for the best in local food.
Specific ideas include:
- Serviced kitchens for micro-producers to help them get out of their home kitchens
- Food production including a community bakery
- Training and exhibitions including free/low cost food education sessions and paid-for kitchen-theatre shows
Office space, hot desks, meeting rooms and shared services for social enterprises. An established social enterprise support provider could be attracted as an anchor tenant be ideally placed to provide support services to tenants and visiting social enterprises.
The conference facilities on the top floor could be opened during evenings and weekends, using The Crags’ successful key-holder model, and provided to local community-based groups at the lowest possible rates.
